What is hand engraving with GRS?
GRS manual engraving combines the traditional manual engraving technique with current technology.
"Hand engraving GRS" applies the technique of manual engraving using an air-powered pneumatic engraver that combines the chisel and hammer technique with the push technique. The pneumatic system uses air to drive a small self-contained piston in a hand-held part, and this piston strikes the engraving tool in the same way as in the hammer and chisel method.
The stick used in this technique is shaped to a sharp shape, with very specific angles. These angles allow the chisel to properly enter the surface of the metal and advance, continuously undulating the metal in front of the tip, leaving behind a small furrow/cut.
About the engraving
Engraving may be described as the art of carving or creating incisions in any material, less hard than the tool used to make them. As a decorative technique, metal engraving was done by graphic ornamentation on a variety of non-metallic materials such as shells, bamboo, wood and stone. The earliest engraving tools were made of flint, bevelled and sharpened, found in the Upper Paleolithic culture of western Europe.
The main attraction of the engraving lies in the brilliant play between light and dark, the contrast between the surface of the base metal and the incised grooves in it. Through the variety of cuts at different angles, either shallow or wide and subtly changing the contour, the light will reflect with each change of direction.
The ancestor of today's engraving tools is the chisel. Specialized chiseling tools, such as chisels, were developed to meet the need to cut smaller-scale incisions into small objects and jewelry to achieve decorative effects.
Hand engraving is a process by which a hardened, shaped and sharpened piece of steel, called a chisel or engraver, is pushed/pressed into the surface of the metal, leaving a cut in the metal. This cut is obtained by the traditional engraving method, in 2 ways:
- "Push hand engraving" - manual push engraving, made by pressing and pushing with the pressure of the hand the stick, which is fixed on a small wooden handle held in the palm. The die is pushed forward using hand pressure, and the etched metal object is held firmly with the other hand and inserted into the tip of the die or rotated into it when a curved line is desired.
- "Hammer & chisel hand engraving" - manual engraving with gouge si hammer, made with the help of a small hammer that hits a light chisel (stichel/engraver), pushing it forward through the metal.
Course content:
- Familiarization with the basic elements of the modern manual engraving system: work bench, GRS system, microscope, vise, work sticks
- Exercising training methods for the development of manual engraving skills, training exercises with the GRS system and the microscope on copper plates, the execution of straight lines, curves, spirals, explaining the geometry of the line and the angle of attack
- Assisted execution of the engraving of a silver medallion using the "hand engraving GRS" method,
- Finishing, polishing and/or antiquing the jewel
All students will practice the specific skills of manual engraving and complete the engraving of a pendant using the "hand engraving GRS" technique - manual engraving that uses a
pneumatic engraver. The decorative part of the medallion can be chosen, the instructor will provide you with several models.
