What are alcohol-based inks?
Alcohol-based inks are specially formulated to create interesting patterns and effects on a large number of materials. This type of ink does not contain acid, is permanent and dries fairly quickly. It is used to produce a glossy, metallic finish or background. Alcohol-based inks easily adhere to a variety of surfaces, for many of them it is generally difficult to apply dyes. Although glossy paper produces better results, this ink can also be applied on acrylic, plastic, plastic or aluminum foil, metal, glass and many non-porous surfaces.
Where they are used
Alcohol-based inks are used to create interesting backgrounds. These include backgrounds for greeting cards, scrapbooks, ornaments, coloring and aging effects for books and similar projects. Due to the fact that the ink is translucent, various effects can be obtained by superimposing several layers of color. The techniques that aim at a single effect (drop, flame, blowing with a pump) are numerous and at the same time much easier to use.
Alcohol-based inks can be diluted with a solution for mixing colors or with alcohol. They can also be used directly, depending on the project, preferences or desired effect. For example o mixing solution of alcohol-based inks offers more subtle color effects while by comparison undiluted inks offer a more metallic finish. The ink can be used with an applicator or applied directly to the paper. Using pipette-tipped bottles, ink droplets of one or more colors can be dripped onto the applicator and spread on paper or other surfaces. Inks, stamps or transparent plastic foils can be used to apply the ink. Rubber stamps are NOT recommended. Alcohol tends to dry the rubber, resulting in the stamp becoming unusable.
Depending on the number and size of the drops, the effects differ. In general, no more than two or three colors are used, too many producing a cloudy appearance. Using an ink or alcohol blending solution will encourage a finer blending of colors. This (solution) is usually gently sprayed on paper or surface.
NOTE: When applying inks on transparent plastic foils as a background, we recommend that they be wiped with a damp cloth beforehand to make sure they are clean. This allows the inks to flow more easily on the surface. The ink drops are then applied to the foil and allowed to dry. Once dry, the background can be left as it is or can be further decorated.
