Bronze is an alloy with a predominant base of copper (Cu) usually about 88% and tin (Sn) 12%. Depending on the final color of the metal, which is to be obtained, the alloy undergoes changes and other metals are added, such as aluminum, manganese, nickel or zinc. For example, yellow bronze is an alloy composed of 78% Cu, 16% Sn and 6% Zn and for white bronze the composition changes by increasing the amount of white metal to 30% Sn and 15% Zn. Brass is also an alloy that has a copper base, in the proportion of 66% Cu and 34% Zn. Bronze and brass are usually considered favorable substitutes for copper jewelry because they have a higher corrosion resistance.
Bronzes and most metals and non-precious metal alloys oxidize quite easily when fire is applied. In the case of non-precious metal clays, the presence of this oxidation process is what prevents the process of sintering of the parts. In most cases, in order to obtain a correct sintering, an oxygen-free combustion is necessary, ie in activated carbon.
In this course we will talk about types of bronze and other precious metal alloys that require testing and increased attention in the combustion / sintering process.
This course is recommended for beginners. A minimum of experience with silver clay is recommended but not required.
Due to the very long burning time, the course extends over a period of 2 days.
Before participating, please read the safety and security rules carefully!
